Even before Francis Scott Key wrote about “the rockets’ red glare” and “the bombs bursting in air” people have been celebrating America with fireworks. Captain john smith was one of the first to set off these recreational explosives in Jamestown in 1608. The early colonies were pretty lax about using their fireworks, but now-a-days patriots must be aware of what they can light off and where. Ike Sriskandarajah reports (no pun intended).
I take the fireworks beat seriously.
